Mechanical seal for stern tube device of a propeller shaft

One of the new products produced and launched by ANOD last years is designing of a mechanical seal for stern tube device of a propeller shaft 115 mm at the frequency of the propeller shaft speed 1400 rev/min.
The particularities of exploitation of the mechanical seal are the presence of large radial and angular shaft displacements and the necessity of providing dismantling and repair of mechanical seals without leakage of outside water on the shaft during the repair. On this vessel, angular displacement appears as a result of vertical displacements of the engine, installed on elastic supports.
Finally they designed the construction of a mechanical seal which provides pressurization at radial displacements of the shaft up to 6 mm in the place of installation of the mechanical seal. The pressurization on the shaft during dismantling of the mechanical seal for repair is performed with an original construction of a parking seal in the form of an inflatable pneumostop. To increase resources for wear from abrasive mixture they use friction pairs of silicon carbide, repairing a mechanical seal after grinding it’s possible to use the friction pairs again.
Successful exploitation of mechanical seals on vessels showed good reparability and reliability in comparison with foreign analogues. Created by ANOD the system of design of mechanical seals and plain bearings has successfully been used for more than 20 years and allows to produce constructions of increased durability exploited for petrochemical plants, energy companies, oil and gas transport companies.
